Run In The Sun

Didn't think I was going to run outside again for a while...but when it was 50+ degrees out today, I had no choice!  On top of being gorgeous outside today, my run went really well...It went so well that I was able to pass a woman riding a bike, yes thats right, I passed a woman riding a bike...I wish I could have caught it on video.  I think that is my first time.

I ran a mile farther than the race on Sunday...and did it at a faster pace.  Boom.

Tuesdays Run:

Lori, the motivational poster below must really hit home for you...since you like to drop the kids off during your run...

No finish line

I just started following Runner's World on Twitter.  Their series of motivational posters is hilarious, but this one felt especially appropriate for the blog...

Ah, the joys of running.

Chilly Chili Recap

Runners #788 and #789

The Chilly Chili was a success.  Turns out I have never run a 5K race before...and this was Erica's second race, both have been 5Ks.  The weather was fine...not bitterly cold or too windy and it didn't snow..so no complaints there.  Erica was able to shave 2 minutes off her 1st race time, which is awesome.
My goal was to try to run it at a 8 minute miles pace...which is exactly what I was able to do.  There were over 1,100 runners/walkers who participated.  Erica and I have a love/hate relationship with the hills here in New York...we love to look at them and they are great for hiking...but when it comes to running...WE HATE THEM!  They are such a pain in my arse...literally and figuratively.  There was one big climb towards the start of the race that took a lot of energy...at the bottom of this blog I am adding the race course and also the elevation along the course, which I find interesting.  I am also going to add a map of the route from our farm to Fertile...Momma Bear, turns out its a heck of climb from the farm to Fertile...who knew?

Random event of the day...we met an '83 Iowa graduate who also ran the race..has season tickets to the Iowa football games...and lives in NY...crazy.

Bloggy McBloggerson

Made a short little 2 mile run today - just to make sure my legs don't forget what it feels like to run before the CHILLY CHILI on Sunday.  1 pm start time.

Sundays Forecast:  High of 33 with 70% chance of snow.

Hey, if you haven't had a chance to check out this web site...its worth the time.

If You Went Running...

Isn't this the way it goes?

My Wiff didn't have this problem today...here is a tweet from her this morning...

@ekathleeng: Early morning run.  My body was not interested.  Still picked up my usual pace, though.  #workoutWIN. Treadmill: http://soc.li/ChKre5O

Good job Wiff.

Guess What Was Sore Today?

If you guessed my big ole backside, you were right!!!  Not sure why the cheeks were sore today, but they were (this is part of the added bonus of over sharing that you get to be part of if you are reading this blog).
Anyway, it was a bit of a struggle running 4 miles this afternoon.  The 24 ounces of energy drink I had on the way to PF didn't seem to help either.  Maybe it was because I have a bit of a cold?  Or maybe it was because I woke up at 1:30 this afternoon?  One or maybe 2 short runs left before the race on Sunday...don't want to over train (yes, this is sarcasm).

Can't Believe I Missed This

But yesterday was National Pie Day...
I couldn't make up something so ridiculous...

WTF

Lori - your son is a good kid for the most part-even though he made you feel like you need to spend the next 24 hours on the treadmill.  Don't forget that your husband is petite and some runway models would like to have his legs.  Your blog post made me laugh...because not that long ago I feel like your son took a shot at me not verbally, but in picture form.  Apparently he thinks I am a midget or something?  Why is Erica 3 times taller than I am?  It looks like I am standing in her palm?  Not sure what kind of a day care you are sending him to, but it doesn't seem to be working very well.  Thanks for the picture Lucas.

Both Erica and I did a long run today...Erica made it 5 miles and I managed to squeeze in a little over 7 miles in an hour.  My run felt good - like I could have gone a few more miles with not much problem...so that made me feel pretty good.  I am sure I will be sore tomorrow...but that is part of the deal.

Sundays Run:
Miles:  7.2
Time:  60 minutes
Pace:  8:19

The Chilly Chili 5K is 1 week away!

Motivational Speaker

Lucas: "Mom, who has a bigger head - you or Daddy?"
Me: "I think Daddy has a bigger head."
Lucas: "Yeah, you're right Mom, but you are much fatter than Daddy."

Ouch.  If anyone needs me, I'll be on the treadmill.

LAY OFF. I'M HUNGRY!!!

I continued my routine of boot camp and tabata class on Monday night and then boot camp again on Wed.  I believe the tabatas class is legit because my metabolism is definitely increasing.  I thought it was in a pretty high gear before, but now I am hungry ALL THE TIME.  Even though it feels like I am eating ALL THE TIME.  This has been a rough transition, I was not prepared.  Why are all the easy- to- find, easy- to -eat foods so BAD for you?!?  This seems like a cruel joke.  I have found myself eating more crap in the last couple weeks than ever before.  I need to spend some serious time on making more healthy choices available to myself.

Last night I did a run on the treadmill:
6 miles
60 minutes
10:00 pace

I have found I have reached a new fitness level, too.  Previously, this run would have sent me straight to the locker room and into the sauna, but instead I found myself on the floor doing crunches, push ups and planks. After I was completely exhausted (i.e. couldn't get off the floor without a great deal of loud moaning), workout session was over.

Speed Training - A Quickie

I wasn't planning on running today, but I was feeling motivated, so I made to trip to PF to do a little speed training.  The workout wasn't very interesting...but I was able to sneakily snap a little picture of my favorite PF workout buddy.  Same elliptical every day (third one over from the end)...same clothes everyday...long sleeve blue shirt, orange shirt over the top of the blue one...and blue shorts.  A Broncos fan...perhaps?

The Good Old Days

Does anyone miss being able to wake up in the morning - keep your pajamas on - proceed to put on 4 wristbands and your velcro shoes - grab your baseball glove and a ball - and then go outside and play catch......with yourself?  I see I am rocking black socks as well - thats classy.

Sunday Funday Run

What a great run tonight!  The run felt really good...haven't run 4 miles for while - And even better than running 4 miles, I got to watch the Packers do their DISCOUNT DOUBLE CHOKE while I was running.  Yes!

Erica and I are going to run a race 2 weeks from today called the Chilly Chili.  Its an outdoor 5k run in a town up near Syracuse.  After the race there is a chili cook off at Cazenovia College which should be interesting.  Hopefully it is warmer that day than it was here today...brrrrrr.  Here is a link to that race if you are super bored.  http://www.chillychili.com/

Don't look now, but we are going to have 1,000 page views in the next couple days!  Yes, 786 of them are from me, but who is counting?

Learning Curve

Tried out my new watch the bro and new SIL gave me for Christmas today.  I was on the track on the Y doing laps.  I would sprint a lap and then run the next lap at my usual pace - repeat until the tropics made it too hard.  Every vent along that route was gushing out heat, it was like I was running in Death Valley.  I only made it 10 minutes before I had to give up and go to the treadmill.  According to my watch, I did 44 laps, but I eventually figured out that I did not have to hit the lap button twice every time I went around. I was thinking it was a push for stop, push for start.  But the watch is smarter than me and I only need to push the button once per lap.
On the treadmill I executed my new favorite workout which is running as fast as I can with the incline completely maxed out (Level 15) for one song, running my normal pace with incline at 5 for one song, and then running as fast as I can with incline at 2 for one song.  Repeat for 20 minutes.
My legs are pretty rubbery.  Love it.

Are You Done Yet?

1)  Has anyone seen Boo Boo?

2)  Do you know if he is done opening his present yet?

5K

Back at it again today!  I am getting back in swing of things...the run felt pretty good today.  I had my Wiff (wife) running on the treadmill to my right and of course the back brace / neck brace guy (who is down to just the back brace) was still dominating his same elliptical right in front of me.  You could say that all was right in my world.

So my best 1/2 Marathon time is 1:51:46 (8:32 pace) - I have no doubt I can put up an even better time this May (as long as there is not a blizzard).

Walking On Sunshine!

I felt the happiness in the air today and now I realize it was because my brother is back to running and most importantly, blogging!!  It may have also been my Vitamin D kicking in, but let's just say it was a brother-sister bond for all our fans.
I fell off the wagon for a little bit as the plague hit our house at the end of last week and my husband and I went down hard.  I am on the road to recovery, but still not 100%.  Of course this did not keep me from Boot Camp class on Monday night and, yes, that's right - TABATAS!  I was totally going to wuss out and not go to Tabatas, but of course peer pressure made me go.
I also did a treadmill run on Sunday, it was very short, only 30 minutes - pace of 12:00 min/miles.  I just didn't have it in me, energy levels have been low.  Playlist: Lady Antebellum's new CD that I got for Christmas!!
I do need to get back to the running.  I think I might sign myself up for a 10 mile run in Wayzata or a 10K run in Golden Valley in April in preparation for Fargo...
The allergy situation is very interesting Aaron, I am fairly certain I would have similar results if I was ever tested.  So, the wheezing is all allergy related and not asthma??  I wonder if that was my problem this summer?  I was running around a lake with an abundance of flora. I just assumed I was having asthma attacks.  The things that make you go hmmmm.......

He's Baaaaaaaack!

How excited is everyone to know that I am back to running...which means I am back to blogging!!  Went to the allergy specialist today to get my allergies figured out...and I found out that I am allergic to just about everything outside...and half of everything inside.  Doc asked me why it had taken so long for me to get tested (I didn't have a great answer for him...but I did pass along the phone number to the BFE and asked him to ask for "The Roz").  Just kidding Momma Bear....but really I did give it to him.  Anyway, I think I am going to get all fixed up...which is good - it might even make my running times better...since I will be able to breath a little easier-time will tell.

Here is my Planet Fitness Treadmill Run...

Oh Tabatas!!!!!

Ever heard of Tabatas? This is a high intensity, but generally shorter, workout which I had the pleasure of participating in last night. I can barely walk today. Stairs make me want to cry. So for those of you who have been in my house, you know I pretty much spent the entire morning close to tears.
I must add that I had done Bootcamp class before Tabatas, so that is probably why I am in so much pain.
Tabata class just started last night. They are a 30 minute class and we do 6 weeks of cardio and then will switch over and do 6 weeks of strength training. The idea is to go all out on the exercises and you are given minimum recovery time (10-20 seconds). You should only need 30 minutes-45 minutes, twice a week because of the intensity of the workout.
The instructor's name is Jane. I had the opportunity to speak with her after class and found out that she is a marathoner - done 12 full marathons so far. She has also done a few triathalons. She has done the half and full marathon in Fargo a few times each. Very interesting to talk to her. In my mind I have nicknamed her "GI Jane". She looks tough -solid muscle - not one of those runners who are super skinny. Advice she gave me included to do regular strength training to avoid injury, especially to get the glutes strong so your legs don't have to do all the work. You do NOT want a runner's butt! (flat). You want one that sticks out, all perky and full of muscle! So, this is going to be a focus of mine now - to get myself a perky butt. Now I just have to figure out how to make that happen. Suggestions??????
