3 for 3

blogged a good blog, but it was lost...here's the shake down:

Mon - 2.5 mi

Tue - 3 mi

Wed - 2 mi + 2 mi bike

...at 6am. boo. getting out of bed can be a real struggle....so far Courtney and I haven't wanted to skip the same day, so it's all good.

#UncleDougQuotes

So I didn't run again today-it was raining once again....but, I think my wonderful wife is signing us up for a gym membership as I write.  I think running inside on a treadmill is going to work a little bit better for me than trying to run outside in the cold/snow/rain.

I didn't make it home for Thanksgiving...but I did get a taste of what was going on via Twitter.  The following tweets (quotes from Uncle Doug) from the Wetsch cousins are too funny not to share...it almost felt like I was there.

Man these atomic fireballs really get you going. (Bronson)
"Yeah, they got a little twang to them." (Uncle Doug)

"Shes got some twang, my chum." (Uncle Doug)

"Teetotalers, yeah - non-swillers." (Uncle Doug)

"Oh, I see you girls don't really eat much, huh?  I get it, I guess you have to maintain your physique."  (Uncle Doug) I assume talking to Brenna and Bria.

White Chocolate

I was going to run today after work -  but it was pouring.  It rained all day, which is better than snowing all day so I am not going to complain too much.

Tomorrow I am planning on getting my run on...

My Running Shoes Missed Me

Went for a short run today after work.  The fact that I was dripping sweat after a 2 mile run in 45 degree weather at just over a turtles pace makes me think that I am still a little sick?

Sundays Run:
Miles:  2.21
Time:  18:27
Pace:  8:21
Run Time Temp:  45 degrees

So Excited - What A Rush!

I am so excited my brother is blogging...its a Christmas Miracle.  Good job Boo!  Sis, nice job on your 5k - sounded like a great experience.

I have not been running in a long time..still sick.  I am thinking maybe tomorrow I might give it a shot, but don't want to wear myself out so I get sick again.  So, I didn't run the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving either...oh well.

Funny story...Erica went through the drive through thru @ Wendies last week...she had Zoe in the back seat with the windows down.  When Erica pulled up to the window to pay...the guy at the drive thru window gave Erica our food and threw in a free hamburger and chicken nugget for the big dog.  She is spoiled.  Can't take her anywhere.

Boo, you are probably good to go...start tapering this week!

Two days in a row...

Made the trek to the gym today. Ran Pi miles...i.e. 3.14 miles hahahahahahaha

Could run a half-marathon tomorrow (if I wanted to).

Training complete? TBD

I Am Sure The Sky Will Fall Today...

I was just going about my business about to blog about the TD 5K I ran yesterday and what to my wondering eyes should appear....

The Turkey Day Miracle!!!  Boo Boo posted on the blog!!!  Welcome Dear Brother!!
My news is so small in comparison, but I guess this is what this blog is supposed to be about - my half a** training!

Ran the TD 5K yesterday morning with Cousin Bronco.  It was an experience for both of us and I had an awesome time!  There were over 10,000 people participating.  We were fairly close to the start line based on the HUGE amount of people behind us, but even at that, we could not see the start line where we were standing.  Too many people and it was around a corner.  It took us about 5 minutes to get to the start line once the race started.  The weather was perfect and running through downtown Minneapolis was exciting. The clock at the finish line said 32 mins and some change.  However, I need to deduct 5 minutes from that due to the delayed start - so I am stating I came in at 27 mins and some change.

Bronco is making noise about maybe running the Half Marathon with us in the Spring.  We even talked about him coming on the blog as a surrogate for Boo Boo since he has been MIA.

Aaron - thanks for the running info.  I think I will give it a go.

Breaking News: The Blister is Gone!

24 Nov 2011--A 20-something white male purchased a membership at the 24-hour gym Snap Fitness last night and was spotted at this locale early this morning. Clad in his Asics and a pair of Nike wind-pants, he valiantly climbed aboard the Nautilus treadmill and pressed START. Two miles and 22 minutes later, the belt slowed to a stop. When asked how he felt about this run, the man stated, "...it's a good start; I don't want to over do it." He plans to return tomorrow for another round with the Nautilus. Stay tuned to see if (a) he returns to tackle another 2 miles, (b) his belly is too full from his Thanksgiving feast that he must take another 2 months off from running, or (c) the blister returns.

Training Plan From Runners World

Lori - I think this could be very helpful for you...its a little bit of a guide that you can use.
Brian - I didn't find any training plan for a half marathon that was 2 weeks long - sorry dawg.

Running Advice

After reading an article about a couple of runners collapsing and dying at the Philadelphia Marathon/Half Marathon last week...I thought I should share this article.

I didn't run today.  I actually woke up with a wicked cough and called into work sick and haven't left the couch all day.

Running Doc's steps to avoid sudden collapse

The prevailing theory about sudden death (fatal cardiac arrhythmia) in healthy patients in an endurance event, as we have discussed here before, is that either a caffeine load of more than 200 mg has caused enough decreased blood flow to disrupt an ischemic area’s electrical rhythm, or the release of muscle byproducts has caused a small plaque to activate platelets and a small clot to form in a coronary artery. Either of these things can cause a fatal arrhythmia. Limiting caffeine and taking a baby aspirin should help eliminate these possibilities.
The X-spot is where a runner knows he (or she) is going to finish the race, or where he can see the finish line and push to a hard sprint finish. This adrenaline rush, we think, might push the electrical system of the heart to an arrhythmia if the muscle is ischemic by one of the two mechanisms described above or if the participant has underlying heart disease. Not pushing yourself that last mile and taking it as you have the last few miles might make participating safer. So would encouraging announcers not to goad runners by saying things like, "If you can hear my voice you can break 4 hours!"
I am looking forward to our next IMMDA meeting when our group will be outlining a worldwide study on sudden death in our sport. As of now we only have some small evidence from a few studies and a lot of anecdotal evidence and theory. Our study should put more science into our recommendation.
In the meantime, as I've said repeatedly, we continue to advise the following on race day:
1. Take a baby aspirin (81mg) the morning of the event.
2. Limit caffeine that morning to less than 200 mg.
3. Take the last mile like the previous without a fast sprint.
These recommendations make sense to me and my fellow marathon medical directors. When our patients ask us, "How can I prevent becoming the next one?" our advice - right after urging them to get a comprehensive physical - consists of the three steps listed above. I hope you follow this advice, in conjunction with your physician, as well.

Ma. Ma. Ma. Ma. Ma. Ma.Ma.Ma.Ma.Ma.Ma.Ma.Ma.Ma WHAT!?!?!?!

Hi.

This is a favorite of my brothers.  It is funny - IF - it is not actually your life. Last week Luker had the stomach flu and now this week it is Lucy's turn.  Man, do I ever hate the vomit.  At least Luke is at the age where he is able to recognize what it going to happen and yells for me.  I can then help direct him to an appropriate receptacle.  He actually became so traumatized from repeated vomiting on Christmas Day last year that he now likes to keep a large green bowl in his room (just in case).
Lucy vomited in her crib sometime during the night Tuesday.  I got her up Wednesday morning and found a huge, dried pile of vomit (she had hot dogs Tuesday at dinner - Yeah!).  At least she had the good sense to sleep on the opposite end of the crib with the vomit.
I have really smart kids.
Got a call from daycare yesterday morning - Lucy was not "herself" and neded to be picked up so I took her home and she slept.
They called again this afternoon - now she has diarrhea and needs to be picked up.
I am going to run after work today.  Please pray that I find my way back home.

So Much To Blog About...

First things first...
Today I sold this pair of running shoes (one of the newest and most "in" shoes in running right now)
To an elderly lady that looked a lot like this
It cracked me up.  She was so disappointed I didn't have a shoe horn...I told her that nobody has made or used a shoe horn since '65.  So, I filled in as her shoe horn and got her into her stylish shoes!

Now for the running...
I really didn't want to run tonight.  Here is a list of excuses that I could have used tonight...
*Its dark
*Its too cold
*Its snowing (a little light dusting that won't stick)
*I just ate dinner and my tummy is full
*I was tired from work today and still haven't recovered from work yesterday

But then I remembered what month it is...Yep, if you have no life and follow this blog you know that it is NO EXCUSE NOVEMBER.  So, I put on my shoes and got my run in...and hated just about every step of the run for all of the reasons I listed above.  When I got home, I needed to lick my wounds...fortunately, I have a giant dog in the house with an enormous head and a tongue that goes on for days that can do the licking!

Thursday Run:
Miles:  3.6
Time:  30:15
Pace:  8:23
Run Time Temp:  31 degrees

I'm Sailing Away...

I had ever intention of running 5 miles today when I got home from work, I really did.  I woke up at 4 am this morning so I could get to work by 5 am...I should have finished up work around 1 pm...but I ended up staying until 8 pm...so my little 15 hour work day took the wind out of my sails and I couldn't get myself to run tonight.  I plan on running tomorrow.

Has anyone read about the couple who got married while running the NYC marathon?  Their buddy was an ordained minister and officiated the ceremony and ran the marathon as well..

The Twins signed a 39 year old short stop today...I think I might start taking some grounders and give spring training 2013 a shot.

Radiating Awesomeness

I said I was going to try to run 20 miles this week...and I did it...again, pretty proud of myself and again I am patting myself on the back with my long arms that were passed down to me from my mother.
I worked almost 50 hours this week, so running 20 miles on top of being on my feet all day everyday for the last 6 days was difficult.  At mile 4 today, my feet told me to stop running...but I was still 2 miles from home so that wasn't much of an option.  Taking the rest of the weekend off from running!  The Turkey Trot is less than 2 weeks away.  Gobble Gobble.

Saturdays Run:
Miles:  6.52
Time:  58:54
Pace:  9:02
Run Time Temp:  48 degrees

It's Official...

I am registered for the race!!!

Based on the tiered pricing, it looks like Boo is going to be paying the full $70.

Hum Drum

Well, it has been awhile since I posted - Brother Aaron, your back must really be hurting from carrying this blog!  I don't know what my problem has been, no excuses.  I'll do an extra mile or two for you!
I have been a big wuss with the colder weather, I haven't wanted to run outside.  I'm also put off by the darkness that drops down around 5:30 p.m.  So, I've switched up my routine which I will outline for your reading pleasure:
Mondays: Boot Camp class (which I now call "booty camp")
Run on treadmill for 30 minutes
Wednesday: Boot Camp Class
Run on treadmill for 30 minutes
Friday: Thai Boxing Class
Run on treadmill/track for 30 minutes

Sometimes I don't make it to the Y in time for Boot Camp, so then I just run for 60 minutes (treadmill or track).  My times on the treadmill are slower than when I run outside.  I am generally doing 10 minute miles, so if I run 30 minutes, I am running 3 miles and if I run 60 minutes, I am running 6 miles.  However, the program I am running has some significant incline action so I take that into consideration.
Maybe this is why I haven't been blogging - nothing very exciting to report.
I am positive Aaron is going to love this tidbit -  I put a little Salt-N-Peppa in my running playlist.
Sa-Weet!!!!

Today I Was Singing Walking In Memphis While Running In Endicott

Today was a butt kicking of sorts...I turned my 4 mile run into a 6.38 mile run and it felt great.  I didn't put up a great pace, but I got stopped a couple of times at a few intersections waiting for cars so I am not concerned about that.

In unrelated news, I just got off the phone with Boo Boo and he informed me that his "computer isn't working."  This is why he is unable to blog...and train.  I believe he said he would start training on May 1st.

Thursdays Run:
Miles:  6.38
Time:  55:42
Pace:  8:43
Run Time Temp:  40 degrees

Doppelganger

There was no running for me today...but my doppelganger was brought to my attention...you can't tell me that this doesn't look a little like me - right?

Oh, and my wife cheated and became the 4th follower - I have made an executive decision and disqualified her from the cash prize...so I will send the cash to the 5th follower - I am so excited...

A Cash Prize Will Be Sent To The Next Person Who Officially Follows This Blog - You Will Be Called "Follower Number 4"

Ran in the dark tonight...but it was gorgeous outside...and its November 8th -  not going to be able to say that much longer.  Todays run felt much better than yesterdays so that was a step in the right direction.  My pace was still nothing to write home about (Mom, don't be expecting a letter about my run - sorry).

I wonder if my sister is ever going to blog again.  Lori gets 1 new friend and is now too busy to blog.

Boo Boo - 1 blog post is all we want...give it to us.  Give us a little update on your blister...

Tuesdays Run:
Miles:  3
Time:  26:57
Pace:  8:59
Run Time Temp:  55 degrees

10,000

I am sure that I consumed 10,000 calories this past weekend.  I didn't have a great run today - I think my body was unsuccessfully trying to get rid of the 80 ounces of blue moon that was dumped into it on Saturday.  Going to see if I can't run close to 20 miles this week...that will make me feel better about things.  Just about ran a pace of a minute slower than I had been in the past couple weeks (on a 4 mile run)...OUCH.

Mondays Run:
Miles:  4.1
Time:  37:15
Pace:  9:06
Run Time Temp:  60 degrees!

Liver Training Update - Wooooo!

I have a need to share this story...it has nothing to do with running...but its entertaining (at least to me it is).

The wife and I checked out a little bar (The New Yorker) last night (seriously, the bar was smaller than the living room at the farm - but was full of people).  It had about 10 chairs lined up at the bar and two tables.  Of course the bar stool that I was sitting in was missing the back...awesome...and even worse than that...........
I was stuck sitting next to these 2 Woo-Girls (A female who is often found going 'WOOOOOO!' in public. This behavior is most often exhibited while in the presence of other woo-girls.  It is speculated that this is a mating call used to attract men of less than average intelligence. This behavior can most easily be observed in bar districts, at maroon 5 concerts, or spring break destinations. Known for their mating call which is a loud "WOO!!!" whenever they have any amount of alcohol intake.) who tried to sweet talk my wife out of the shoes she was wearing...which happen to be the shoes she wore for the wedding....not gonna happen ladies-step back!
Then after the Woo-Girls were done with my wife and her shoes...another woman comes up to my wife from the other direction and asks if she can touch her hair...At this point I am wondering WTF is going on?  Of course Erica said yes and the lady proceeds to stroke her hair...weird, wild, stuff.  After that lady was done petting my wife's hair and whispering in her ear...it was time to go home...what is wrong with people?

FYI - 195 days until race day!

Give Me A Minute

Still trying to catch my breath from my run.  It wasn't freezing outside, but it was cold enough where I am still wheezing and coughing 2 hours later.

Had a good run - especially considering it was at the end of a long week...and I worked and was on my feet running around all day today.

It is now time to go train my liver.

Saturdays Run:
Miles:  4.09
Time:  33:45
Pace:  8:15
Run Time Temp:  44 degrees

Challenge Accepted

I took a big dog for a 4 mile walk today.  No running.  As I am writing this sitting on my couch...I have the big dog laying with her head on my lap...sleeping / snoring / twitching...she is probably dreaming about chasing her tail.

Lori, I have a similar story about looking / feeling younger than we are...
The last time that I ordered a jaeger bomb (the last time I was in Pennsylvania / the last time I went bowling with 3 people I just met)...the bartender looked at my ID, looked up at me...and then said "Good for you."
Congrats on your new friend Lori - thats awesome.

My New Best Friend

Last night I ran around the track at the Y listening to my new obsession - Maroon 5.  I am waiting for Adam to realize his Victoria's Secret model girlfriend is nothing compared to what he could have - ME!!!
After running, I went down to the gym to participate in my new favorite form of punishment which is called - Thai Boxing Class.  The instructor said something about the fact that I was running and now going to do this class.  I said I only ran a few miles, hadn't been running too long.  He said something about how you have the energy for that when you're under 30.  I said I was not, he gave me a weird look so, I said I am actually 35.  There was a woman instructor standing there and she exclaimed that I could definitely pass for 25.

I think that's a stretch, but I've decided to make her my new best friend, anyway.

Time: 30 minutes
Miles: 3
Pace: 10:00
Thai Boxing: Kicked Ass - have the bruises today to prove it

Got A Little Boom In My Big Truck...

Gonna Open Up The Doors And Turn It Up

Yep, thats right - I have gone running 3 days in a row.  Thank goodness Mom passed along her long arms gene (monkey arms) to me so I am able to pat myself on the back.

I like it when the last mile of my run feels better than the rest.

Wednesdays Run:
Miles:  4.07
Time:  33:58
Pace:  8:20
Run Time Temp:  55 degrees

Its No Excuse November

I welcomed in November with a little jog around the neighborhood with my wifey!  At this pace, I will definitely run more this month than last.  My legs were sore today so the run today helped loosen them up.

Tuesdays Run:
Miles:  1
Time:  10:46
Pace:  10:45
Run Time Temp:  45 degrees

As I wrote the vitals from my run I noticed that my pace is 1 second faster than the actual time it took me to run a mile.  Interesting.  I'm not a big math guy, but something doesn't seem to add up.
