Monday, Monday, Monday....

I forced myself to go to the gym tonight after not making it there over the weekend.  I did a pretty poor job, but at least I went.

2.53 miles in 28 minutes....

Hopefully I can make it two days in a row tomorrow!

Dear Zoe...

How is it possible that you are unable to get all of these kibbles in your mouth...

When you are working with this giant vacuum...

 Unbelievable.

Oh, And Boo Boo

I have gone out for "late night runs" before as well.  And I have forgotten my "ipod."  I hear you loud and clear.
Sometimes I have even gone out for "early morning runs."  Nice job Boo.  So proud of you.

Skye Island Drive II

So Wiff decided to decide the running route today...she told me it would be similar to a route we ran the other day with the exception of turning and running on Skye Island Drive.  I asked her if she realized that Skye Island Drive was a tougher hill than the one right next to our house...that isn't fun to run up either.  She said that this hill is at the beginning of the run so it should be better than at the end when we run up the other hill...and if need be, we can walk up it.
Here is the route and elevation.

If you have been looking back at my blogs from last September, specifically Sept. 8th, you will remember that the last time I ran that hill I blogged this:

Skye Island Drive

Because of the flooding, I had to take a new running route...and it stands to reason the streets that are not flooded are the ones that are at the highest elevations...like Skye Island Drive.  Well, I ran up that road today and I disliked every step of it...it was about .7 of a mile long and way too steep.

So, things have not changed.  It sucked just as much today as it did last September.  The Wiff did not appreciate it either.  It was a good week for me - I ran 6 of 7 days this week.  Boom.

Late Night Run...

I went for a run tonight around 9 o'clock...Courtney was still at work, so I figured I would get a workout in.

Just like my brother, I forgot my ipod on the way to the fitness center.  Granted when I realized I forgot it I was only about 10 steps on my journey, but that would've been ten more steps added to my workout...we can't have that!

Anyways, I ran 3 miles in 32 minutes.... Not too shabby!

Don't Leave Home Without It

I was a rookie today...I forgot my ipod so I had to listen to myself pant for 4 miles today in the 90 degree heat.  It was annoying.  I did push myself a little bit and put together a good pace...

Who Thinks Boo Boo Can Figure Out This Problem?

There's a group of 48 people. I need to split them up into four groups, four times (different groups each time), and make sure that everyone meets everyone (so each person needs to be in a group with each of the 47 other people at least once).

Boo Boo, you're up - We need an answer by this weekend.

And has anyone heard from my sister?

Whats Your Form?

My form = pretending I am holding a potato chip between my thumb and index finger

Wiffers form = limp wristed - fingers pointing towards the ground (yep, thats right - I was watching you)

Word Problem

If Aaron and the Wiffers went running tonight...and ran 3.28 miles and it took them 35 minutes and 44 seconds to run that distance...what is their pace?

For the thousands of followers out there keeping track...yes, that was my 3rd straight day of running.

Thursdays Run
Miles:  3.28

Finally....

I finally went for a run tonight. It has been 11 days since I ran last....I almost forgot where the gym was at...that's how long it has been.

I ran 2.5 miles in 26 minutes.  That is all I could take. I need to ease my way back into this whole running thing. I had a good two weeks where I ran consistently....I call that serious training!

I'm An Idiot

Today was my 3rd run in 4 days...I am getting back into making running a priority again.  It feels pretty good - most of the time.  It would be nice to find a little race to enter sometime soon - might have to look into that.
Just in case you live under a rock, have no friends, have no television, do not read the paper and when you get on your computer you only read this blog...The Olympics starts on Friday.  USA!  USA!  USA!  USA!

Do you ever go running...look down at your watch and guess that you have been running for 45 minutes only to find out that you have been running for 23:11...and then cuss and swear under your breath and try to talk yourself out of turning around and going home right there.  Me too, just about every time out.

Seriously, is that a watch she is wearing?  Could it be any bigger?  Why not just wear a grandfather clock around your neck?

Wednesdays Run:

Just on the off chance that you are surfing the internet and come across the blog...I just wanted to say Happy Birthday.  And this picture reminds me of you.

Yes, I Probably Should

Black Cat Tuesday

I went for a run tonight with the Wiffers.  It was crazy how many black cats that we ran past tonight...by the end of the run I was getting a little worried.

It was a beautiful night for a run.  A little breeze and about 70 degrees.

Hailing From Rock Bottom, Loserville, Nothing Town

Shorter run today - My body is a little sore.  Its been a while since I have ran this much in a week.  Its a good sore.  I did finish my run by tackling the hill that gets me back up to the house.  I didn't take the toughest way up, but no matter what way you go, its no picnic.  So, kudos to me.  When I got to the top of my hill...this is exactly what it looked like and I felt like...

The map of my run is below along with the elevation. Boo Boo, I noticed that your runs have been awful flat...don't be scared to mix in 1 hill a week!  Boom.

Long run.......

On Monday I ran 6.5 miles in 1 hour and 12 minutes.  This is the longest run I have completed since the half marathon.  I felt pretty good, even if it was 102 degrees.  I worked on my tan a little bit too!

Yesterday, I went for about a 2 mile run outside, nothing too great...but it was fun to run outside again.

Tonight I went back  to the treadmill for another 2 mile run.

Love Run

Took a run tonight with the Wiffers.  It was a lovely run with a lovely woman on a lovely night.
Miles:  2.3
Time: 25:14
Pace: 11 ish
I also rode bike to and from work today ...
Got a call from my brother today - he said he has been running.  As far as I am concerned,  if you don't BLOG about it...it never really happened.

My Domination Of July Continues

Todays goal = To run (any length in any time at any pace without stopping).

It was a lofty goal, but I did manage...it wasn't easy, but I felt good when I was done.

Sundays Run:
Miles:  4.45
Time:  37:48
Pace:  8:29

So here is a quick look at my domination of July:

Saturday Morning Run...

I did not make a Saturday morning run because I was not awake Saturday morning...I rolled out of bed at 12:30 because a bowl of frosted flakes was calling my name..and I had stuff to do, or not.  Oh, and just a guess here...but since I am writing this blog at 1:43 am....I am guessing there is not going to be a Sunday morning run taking place.

Booney just dominating the running scene right now...just needed to get them into the right climate I guess.

If the Twins are trying to make the A's feel all warm and fuzzy about themselves...they are doing a hell of a job.

Saturday morning run.........

Courtney and I went to workout at the fitness room this morning.

I ran for 3.02 miles in 30 minutes.  If my math is correct, that's a little less than 10 minute miles.....I'm quite speedy!

Courtney ran on the treadmill and did weight lifting!

It was good to get the workout out of the way, so now I can enjoy the day!

It was a good week...

As Aaron mentioned, I got started with map my run last Thursday....I like the program because it tracks everything for me.  Since last Thursday, I completed 10 different runs and a total of 28 miles..... It will make it easier for me to have goals on a week by week basis.

I ran outside today for 2.8 miles.  I love running outside so much more than running on the treadmill...even if it is 100 + degrees outside.  Today it was only 98 degrees outside (thank goodness for the rain this morning), so I took advantage of the cool weather.

Oh, and I did go for a short bike ride today also to air up the tires on the bike.....so that counts in my training too!

Allergy Shot

So I was sitting at the allergy office getting my weekly two shots in the arm...and waiting to answer the same question I am asked every week to make sure I am who I am...Can I have your birthday? (yes, I realize this is a thorough screening process)..
So my question to you is - How do you think I answer this question?
A) 10-23-77
B) Do you not have a birthday?  And why would you want mine?
C) Sorry, it is not for sale.

I was also sitting behind a guy who had just a wonderful t-shirt on...
Reason #426 NOT TO BE THAT GUY...STD does not stand for So Totally Drunk.

Really?  It doesn't?  Pretty sure thats not what 99% of people think it stands for...

Belching All The Way

I must have completed about 85 burpies tonight during the course of Boot Camp class.  Wow.  That sucked.  To add insult to injury, half of them ended with a squat jump onto a raised platform, the other half ended with pulsing squats.  Almost 80% of our class tonight was timed exercises, so I was on repeat until I heard "stop".  I couldn't keep count of all the reps. It's going to be another week of crying up and down stairs.  This is going to sound crazy, but I actually went in to the sauna after this workout because of how tough it was.  Yes, I am aware that we have been in the middle of a blistering heat wave.  I can't explain it.

I've heard from a few different runners, the benefits of runners cross training with the bike, so AT, I think you are definitely going to go faster next year!  I thought I would give it chance this summer, too.  Our fam is signed up to do an organized family ride in Mankato in September (i.e. food and drink stops, music/bands).  Paul is going to get some type of attachment so Luke can hook up to his bike and I guess I will be pulling Lucy in the Burley.  Thank God we let them know the circus was coming.

Boo - try more protein.  Supposed to increase the size of the muscles - might help with your head situation.

I am SO happy we are going to continue with the blog and I know all of our fans will be, too.  I have been flooded with text messages begging us to continue.....so we shall.

Juice Newton

So I went for a run today and by far the best song on my run was from Juice Newton.  If you have not heard Queen of Hearts you need to listen to it immediately after wasting your time reading this blog post.  She might have the best name in music.
  • Rode my bike to work today.  Its 4.6 miles each way...mostly downhill on the way there and uphill on the way home.
  • Boo Boo is now a member of Map My Run! Welcome to technology...now when you get done running you can track your miles on the computer and then blog about it.  Lets see...members of Map My Run include:  Booney, Erica, & Aaron.  Is anyone missing?
My run today was no good.

My excuse list
  1. It was too hot
  2. I have not been running in a while
  3. I had no energy left because I rode bike to and from work today.

Its All In The Name

  • I think I could run faster in 2013...all I would have to do is hold off shitting the bed for the last 3 miles and I could put up a little better time.  I am still trying to scrape the remnants out of my clothes from that finish.
  • My guess is that team BOONEY will not start training until April.
  • Showing up on time would be helpful.  Maybe we should camp out at the dome the night before?
  • Do you think Boo Boo will have a bigger head by next year?

I just want to point out...

that AT's post on 4/24/12 regarding Motivational Poster #17 isn't so far from what actually happened on race day.

I'm just sayin'

Can we go FASTER in 2013???

Wow - Boo put up a blog.  What a Rush!!!
I just love my brothers for their own unique qualities and this blog makes those qualities SHINE!

I have had so much fun over the past year "training" for the half marathon and it's all because of my brothers.  I have loved the blog because it has given me a way to keep up with the brothers and to feel much closer to them.  Thank you both so much and I love you.

My vote is to keep up the blog and train for faster times at Fargo in 2013.  What do you guys think?

I've been working pretty exclusively on my strength training since my Minneapolis Relay.  I was saddened to find my upper body strength had decreased significantly over the two months prior to Fargo. I've only done a few short runs, otherwise it's been Boot Camp class and Thai Boxing class.

Really?

Really?  Now you decide to start blogging...once the race is over.
You have got to be kidding me.

You are a running fool Booooooo.
I am impressed.

Where have all the bloggers gone?

Over the past two weeks, I have ran 11 out of 12 days.  My training for the half marathon is going quite well.  I usually run 3-4 miles per workout.  I'm ready for 2013!

Courtney has also ran/cardio 10 out of 12 days!!  She is well on her way to a PR as well.

Lies

The blog post below is nothing but lies

The One That Aaron DOESN'T Give As A Choice....

Is my favorite:
Remember that one time when AT and Boo were out fishing and Boo got his line caught in the tree in the woods?  And do you remember how AT went into the woods to get the line and ended up getting poison ivy all over his body?  And then do you remember how AT was itching SO BAD and he took a shower and the HOT water felt SO GOOD that he kept making the water hotter and hotter?  And do you remember how he ended up getting burns all over his body from the hot water, ON TOP of the poison ivy?

I do.

A)  That one time Lori burned her car up
B)  That one time Momma Bear burned the lawnmower up
C)  Those many many times when Boo Boo wears long sleeve shirts when its 108 degrees to prevent being sunburned and then moving to Arizona where I've heard the sun shines from time to time

Runnin' Down A Dream

Wednesday I did a few miles before my softball game - clocked about 4 before I needed to warm up the arm.  Was feeling pretty good so I averaged a little over 9 min miles.  We won the game because the other team had to forfeit (not enough girls), but we played it out anyhoo.  They played 6 guys and we still whomped them.
Unfortunately, the Twins did not do as well on Thursday against Toronto.  I had the good fortune (if you can call it that these days), to attend the game.  It was another whomping, but now I was on the losing end.  This, my friend, is the ying and yang of life.
Last night I ran about 4.5 miles, but was not feeling so strong.  I averaged 11 minute miles and struggled a little that last mile.
Today I ran my BIG run, and the last one before race day.  I did an 11 miler today and averaged 11 min miles. My route had me going right by the gas station again at mile 3.3, which is so convenient!  I was doing really good until I hit mile 7.5.  It was around this time that I started to feel a little tired.  Then, I felt a pain in my right knee, so I walked it off.  The rest of my run was pretty tough.  I also started to feel like I just didn't have any "fuel" in my stomach/system.  So, I did more walking due to the knee pain and lack of fuel, than I normally do.
Lessons?
1) I was running too fast
2) I need to "fuel" up better/more prior to those big runs
3) I shouldn't have run last night, or run less than I did

Nobody Makes Me Bleed My Own Blood

Are you kidding me??  I am making this personal - I better be the best one or there is going to be hell to pay.  Aaron Thompson - Oh, real original...I'm not even the only 34 year old Aaron Thompson running the race.

Running Shoes...Remember Me?

So I was shocked to find out that the last time I ran was 6 days ago...and when I ran today it felt like I hadn't been running for a while.  It was a nice afternoon for a run - but took a while to find a rhythm.

Wednesdays Run
Miles:  7.89

Lori - I think you have a pretty good playlist there and I am jealous of the Jett/Heart concert.  I would really appreciate that concert.

Runner Tracking

Not exactly sure how this works, but apparently you can track anyone running the half or full marathon...
Thought I would share this info for the peeps out there interested in keeping track of their friends / family / etc...

RUNNER TRACKING

For all of our wonderful spectators and families who will be following our half-marathoners and marathoners, we are happy to announce that there will be runner tracking.
Spectators and families will also be able to find the map tracker from www.mtectracking.com and linked to from their runner's individual results page on www.mtecresults.com.
The tracking program for the Fargo Half Marathon and Marathon will be operational during the week of the Fargo Marathon.

Rockin' Chicks

In unrelated news, I am going to a Joan Jett/Heart concert on June 29th at the Mystic Lake outdoor ampitheatre with my friend Val!!  We have booked a room at the hotel so we can just spend the night.  I am soooo excited!

Just to get a tie in to the blog, here's my playlist from tonight's run.  I know AT is going to love it!  I had to revamp my whole itunes to put it on my home computer.  So, I ended up actually making some purchases from itunes this past weekend.  Aren't you proud of me?

Dr. Feelgood

Epic appointment with new primary physician today.  She's a former marathon runner and currently competes in a few triathalons each summer. I gave her 3 pages of concerns. Here's the skinny:
1) Pulse 58.  Aaron - challenge taken and I failed!  However, my blood pressure was 100/60 - pretty good.
2) Albuterol inhaler to take as needed for my exercise-induced asthma.  This is why I have some problems breathing when running.  I am thinking this will be super helpful.
3)  Immodium for the gastric distress (aka runner's trots) and desitin for the problems the diarrhea creates. Lucy will outgrow the diaper rash cream before I do.
4)  Apparently I have a hectic schedule, highlighted by my statement; "A 7 or 8 mile run is a nice, welcome break." This may be why I get sick every month. She suggested I start cutting down by only doing one class on Mondays. Hmmmm.....we'll see :).
5) I am officially in "The Club" as I have one dead toenail on each foot from running.  Nothing can be done - wear the battle wounds with pride.
6) She ordered a bunch of labs so we'll see what those results bring.

I ran 5.6 miles on Saturday and 7 miles today.  It has been cold, rainy and windy here.  Tough conditions for running.  I plan to do a short run on Wednesday before my softball game, a short run on Friday night and a long run on Saturday morning.
Next week will be just a couple of short runs to rest up for the BIG DAY!!

Social Coma

Sorry that I have been MIA for a few weeks.  I have gotten in a few short runs and a couple long ones.  I also started Softball, so I have been working that into the mix.  Had our first regular season game on Wednesday and I blasted one over the left center fielder.  We were losing during the whole game and then in the bottom of the 7th, we scored 4 runs to win it.  Too bad Span couldn't have done the same for the Twins that night....

Since I have been focused on just trying to get the runs in, I haven't been keeping close tabs on my times.  I know that the longer the run, the closer I average a 10:00 min/mile.  Most of my runs have been short ones...

Paul put together a sweet 8 mile run for me on Sunday (averaged around 9.5 min/miles).  It was perfect...  I ran about 3 miles through residential streets and Purgatory Park.  When I came out of Purgatory Park, the next part of my run took me right by the Holiday Gas Station on Hwy 62 and 101!!  I ran right up to the store, ducked inside to the bathroom, dropped off the kids and was back out on the sidewalk to finish up the last 5 miles.  It was the most comfortable run to date.  So, as far as what is most likely to happen, I am putting in all my chips that I will be in the Porta Potty by Mile 3.

Go Erica!!!!!
And Aaron - your story about the guy with the sweatshirt on the Treadmill just made my day :).

Be Gentle - Its My First Time

Total rookie today...or space cadet...or blonde...or some combination of the 3.
So I drive to Planet Fitness to make my long run today...was feeling pretty motivated to get on the treadmill and bust out 10 miles.  I stopped at Dicks to get some Gu Chomps and a Gatorade for my run - I was ready to go....almost.  Standing on the treadmill after I put my socks on...I grab my Glycerin 9s and realize that I left my shoe inserts at home...so my running shoes have no inserts in them at all...not my superfeet and not the original shoe inserts...Well, I wasn't going to drive back home to get them...and I couldn't not run today - so I just put on my shoes...grabbed my headphones and put those on...and made my run anyway.
At the 4.61 mile mark I looked down at my iPod and realize that I have been running the whole time without ever turning my music on - just genius on my part.
My actual run felt really good...and not having shoe inserts didn't really bother me as all...
Erica has exactly one week left until her first ever half marathon...what a rush!

So the guy 2 treadmills down from me today was doing a walking warm up...he finished up with his walk and was going to take his sweatshirt off...So, he hits stop on the treadmill and the belt starts to slow down - In the meantime he starts pulling his sweatshirt over his head...the sweatshirt gets caught over his head / face so he couldn't see anything...at this point his arms were flailing all over the place...I'm laughing to myself...and then the belt completely stops....but he does not....he continues to walk forward and runs into the front of the treadmill while his sweatshirt is still stuck over his head...this guy stumbles backwards and just about falls off the back of the treadmill.  I felt bad for the guy - but honestly watching this made my day!

Where You At?

Umm...Boo Boo....Sis....are you there?  Anyone?  Anyone?

Lets play a little game called "Would you rather."

Would you rather...
A) Poke your eyes out with a soldering iron
B) Watch the Twins play "baseball"
C) Pull every single one of your toenails out

Oh yeah, I ran today...and it was amazing (and by amazing I mean it was okay...and by okay I mean that it was fine).  In addition, Momma Bear was yelling at me yesterday through text message telling me I needed to start taking my training seriously...so I will start trying harder...starting right meow.

The Home Stretch

I am pretty sure that this is the most excited I have been to run a half marathon.  It is right around the corner.  Not many long runs left before race day - and that puts a smile on my face.  I only ran 4 miles last week, but I think my body needed a little rest.

What one of the following is most likely to happen:

A) Lori drops a deuce by mile 3
B) Boo Boo will pull a hamstring and Full Court will carry him across the finish line
C) Aaron will be wearing more than 5 articles of Brooks clothing
D) The Roz misses all 3 of her children cross the finish line

I ran once this week.....

Courtney ran 9.09 miles in 95 minutes yesterday, so I figured I should go for a run today.

I ran 8.6 miles in 98 minutes.

Only a few more long runs to go and I should be good to go.....

Feel More With Less

Didn't feel like running today...but I managed to get in 3 miles before I pooped out.
I had my iPod on shuffle today and had a couple of very entertaining songs turn up...and Lori you will appreciate this more than anyone else...
Divinyls - I touch myself
Salt N Pepa - Lets talk about sex
And I feel like it was fitting that I was wearing this particular shirt today while running...coincidence?

Bad News Bears

Watching the Twins is like watching the Bad News Bears.

I worked my tail off today...the following workout kicked my butt.

The total was 5 miles in 39:53.
I also did 20 minutes on the bike before and after my running as a warm up and cool down.

Jelly Beans - Friend or Foe?

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Brother AT,  and Erica - nice job on the long run!!!  Hopefully I can get in one of those before May 19th.
I am getting back into my routine - did my Boot Camp and Tabatas classes tonight at the Y for strength training. We had a sub for Boot Camp class, a different sub than usual.  She had us do the entire class on the exercise ball.  I must admit that during the class there were some uncomfortable moments for me and after the class I had a strong feeling like I should have been handed some cash....and penicillin.

For my avid fans, I am also going to be running in a relay with Cousin TT on June 3rd in Minneapolis.  Teresa's sister-in-law, Erin, will also be in the relay and another woman I do not think I have met.  We have many dates/times scheduled to practice our hand offs - you better believe I will be channeling Mr. Ward.

A Tradition Unlike Any Other

Lori - You will be fine.  If you can run 7 miles, you can run 13.1 - no worries.  Could you be in better shape, sure...but thats not really the point.  You have done enough training to get yourself through, so relax and just enjoy the journey.

Boo Boo - sounds like you are in great shape and well prepared already for the race.

Big day of running in the Thompson house today.  The Wiff put in a 12.5 mile run outside this afternoon...I had to make an emergency water delivery around the 9 or 10 mile mark...but she did a great job.  She also managed to pick up a nice sunburn along the way!  What a rook -
I went to the treadmill after she got home and made a 10 mile run while watching the final round of the Masters.
My run felt really good...I took Friday off, so I had 2 days off before my run today and I think that made things feel a little better.

Twins played really well this weekend...awesome.

Sundays Run:
Miles:  10.0

Happy Easter!

I've had some training roadblocks the past 3 weeks that have included the following highlights (I am not kidding when I say that all these and more have happened in just the past 3 weeks):
1) Impetigo - Lucy
2) Very deep laceration on head from child's teeth - Lucas
3) Nursemaid's elbow - Lucy
4) Near death cold/flu - Paul
5) Very expensive vet stay for constipation - Clyde
6) Fifths Disease - Luke and Lucy a couple weeks apart

A few of these have involved the Emergency Room and all but one involved a doctor's visit.  All of them resulted in at least one missed training workout for me.  This is problematic when the training days are already limited.  I must admit that last week I was sure that I was going to put the race on the shelf this year, but decided that the thought of that just made me too sad.  So, I am going to keep on, keeping on and just hope for the best.  It's all I can do.  Feels like I am starting from the beginning, again.
Thursday (4/5/12): 4 miles
Friday (4/6/12): 7 miles
Sunday (4/8/12): 4 miles

Sweet Home Arizona

In AZ this week doing work -- job: check; apartment: check; and managed to get a couple of runs in w/Courtney: one @ 4.5 mi and one @ 4 mi. Wasn't too bad since we went early in the day. No sunburn or blisters to report. Considering this trip a success!

Courtney has a more formal/organized training plan, w/longest run of 7mi. Sounds like she is adding a mile to her long runs each week.

The Best Oranges Make The Best Juice

Treadmill run today...it was sooooo boring!  Didn't try to push myself today...just a little maintenance run.  The plan is to do some speed work Friday and then take a day off Saturday.

The Twins season opener is Friday - is everyone else as excited as I am?  I am sure you have looked ahead to the rest of their schedule for April...and you are right...they have a tough schedule to start the season.  They might be 10 games out of 1st place by the end of the month.  Awesome.  Wow, first pitch has not even been thrown yet and my glass is half empty.  Awesome.

Outside Run

So I made my first run outside in a long time today...ran the "Rail Trail."  From beginning to end its 2 miles..but then if you turn around and come back its 4 miles...I think?

Anyway, the last time I ran a down and back on the Rail Trail, my run looked like this on Nov. 19th:
4.02 miles / 33:18 time / 8:17 pace

Today, I am pretty sure I was running against the wind for all 4 miles...and I am sure the whole run was uphill.
Here is what I did today on my run:
4.0 miles / 29:18 time / 7:20 pace

I think I am a little faster...

March Running Totals

April Fools

I took it easy on my long run today and only put in 5 miles.  I am trying not to over do it...never thought I would have to be careful not to run too much.

Great news today...I saw Paul's doppleganger at the gym today....he was on the elliptical behind me while I was cooling down on the stationary bike.  It was quite distracting..I could watch him in the mirror that was in front of us.

What Are You Running For

Taking Tuesday off felt so good that I thought I should take Wednesday off as well...So, I was back at it today.
I warmed up with 20 minutes on the stationary bike and then ran 4 miles.  The first 2.5 miles felt like it was my very first day running...and then the last 1.5 miles felt good.  Its amazing that taking 2 days off can throw a wrench into things.  I did a 20 minute cool down on the stationary bike when I was done with my run.  That was  a nice little Thursday.

More Than Meets The Eye

Just a short run today...legs are sore from yesterday and my hip flexors need a break.  I am taking tomorrow off and resting this weary body.

Played 3 Truths and a Lie at work today...here was my list...If you can't guess the lie, you don't know me.  The number in front of the statement are the number of people from my class that guessed it was the lie.

(16) I have killed a bat
(3) I have 2 screws in my ankle
(0) I was at game 6 of the 1991 world series
(0) I have over 10,000 sports cards

Whats Wrong With You

Didn't feel like running today...but I made it to Planet Fitness and got my butt on the treadmill and got it done.  There are only 7 Sundays left before the big race...that means I only have 7 long runs left - hallelujah!

If Boo Boo keeps up the pace he is on, he will be boardering on overtraining...Boo, can you give us an update on how your fiance's training is going?  And are you guys going to be running together?

I am happy to report that backbrace guy is doing well.  He was on his go to machine today...I still have not witnessed him touch another machine / lift a weight / or change his routine at all in 5 months...I love the variety.  OCD...I think so.

One Run......

I only went running once this past week, but I made it a good one.  On Saturday morning I ran 6.8 miles in 1 hour and 20 minutes. I felt pretty good during the run. It was a beautiful day with no wind, which helped . Hope race day is the same!

Signs of Spring

Ran around the neighborhood.  Very nice changes in elevation to give the run a little variety.  I was amazed at all the trees, shrubs and bushes that are beginning to bloom.  I even saw some Tulips that are in full bloom! The only drawback - I could definitely tell my allergies kicked in full gear - hard to breathe and itchy, watery eyes.
Miles: 4
Pace: 8:30
When I got home, the husband was watching the kids play in the yard from on top of the hill in our backyard.  I sat down beside him and the mosquitoes began taking in the buffet of sweaty flesh.  I then found out the kids had somehow talked my husband into taking out the water table AND filling it with water.  The kids were filling up buckets with water and mixing in some dirt to make mud in their playhouse.  Nice.
Let the Spring begin.
Congratulations to AT!!!!!

The New Balance Challenge

I bet that every time you go to the gym that at least 50% of the people who are over the age of 50 are wearing New Balance shoes.

Its the New Balance guarantee...

Big Day

Well, first off, I passed my state insurance licensing exam today, which is good because that means I get to keep my job...for the last two weeks I have felt like I have been back in school having to take quizzes and do homework every night...no more homework and no more tests!

I had a really easy day of running today...did 4 miles at a very average pace.  I did do 20 minutes on the bike before and after my run...

Tic Tok

I did some speed work today...I've been trying to do 1 day a speed work a week...it seems to be helping so I am going to continue to do it.  I am going to end up running well over 100 miles this month as long as I don't hurt myself on my next run...that is pretty exciting...

I need a Doppler

Did the Lake Run around Medicine Lake last night.  I read there was going to be a high of 70 F, so I packed a tank top and shorts.  I am not sure what the actual temp was while I was running, but it was not 70 F - pretty chilly.  All the bikers were all bundled up.  One woman walking actually had a jacket and a winter hat.  There were a couple guys running with sleeveless t-shirts that gave me the running club nod saying "Stay Strong Sister".
However, I am not complaining about these temps and being able to run outside!  There is a downside - no porta potties out yet, none of the bathrooms are open and the woods provide no cover without leaves.  I was SOL yesterday.  I realized all of this around Mile 5 yesterday while desperately searching for some relief.  The last two miles were very tough and reminiscent of last year -  the walk/run with cheeks clenched that I have perfected.  At one point I run on a couple boardwalks over marsh.  I was actually formulating a plan in my mind that I would climb over the chain link fence on the side of the boardwalk and squat under the boardwalk.  I thought this would be great cover, but when I looked down I figured I would just sink in the marsh and worried a little about what types of creatures I may encounter.

Rook

I forgot my iPod today so I had to make my run with no music...that is oh so sad.  I felt like my wife.  She manages to pack her workout bag right about 50% of the time!

I am still running on the treadmill to try to save my knees and legs a little bit...too much of that road before May will not be a good thing.

I didn't get a new pair of shoes this week, so that is pretty sad.

Down, But Not Out

So nice to hear from you Brother Boo!  Nice job on all those runs!
Brother AT keeps upping the pace - way to go!!!

I had a tough run today, just wasn't feeling it.  As Brother AT has said before, sometimes it's just a win to put your shoes on and go.  That was what today was for me.

8.8 miles
89 mins
10.01 Pace

You may have noticed that I upped my mileage a bit today.  Trying not to get too out of hand - don't want to "peak" too soon.
Ha.

Straight Cash Homey

I am slowly turning into a runner...I would have never guessed it.  Just like I would have never guessed that the Momma Bear is a pilates guru.

After the run today, the Wiff, Zoe, and I went up to Ithaca to do some hiking.  It was gorgeous outside..I do believe I am sunburned...I realize that doesn't take much, but still...its March 18th.  I love this weather!
After the run and the hike...I am pretty sore and will imagine it is going to be worse tomorrow.

Good Job Boo!!!

Madness

Loving March Madness right now...but I am still making time to head to the gym to get my running done.
I had another good run today...I ran at a pace for 6 miles that I have not done before...I keep making progress.

My Wiff got new running shoes the other day...she got a pair of Brooks..the Adrenaline 12.  Now we are one big happy Brooks family.  Just need to find some Brooks doggy shoes for Zoe.

Lori, you should stick with what works for you...don't let reviews be the "be all end all" when choosing your shoes...try them on - give them a test drive and decide from there.  The new Cumulus is not out yet...so you will not be able to get the new version of your current shoe (as far as I am aware anyway).

Run Forrest! Run!

You start your run.  You may be excited to go, or maybe you don't really feel like it, but you put one foot in front of the other and turn on the music.  Those first steps are kinda hard.  Your muscles are tight and cold.  You have a lot of mental "clutter" from work, kids, husband, schedules, etc. that keeps playing through your mind.  But then something happens.  Your muscles are warm and loose.  You've quieted the mental clutter.  You find yourself running at "your" pace.  You know the one.  The one that makes you think - I could run like this forever.  The minutes click by.  The road stretches out behind you.  And you feel like Forrest Gump.
Inevitably, you burn off all the calories and dip into your fat stores (hopefully).  You get little tears in your muscles and they fill up with lactic acid.  You start to feel tired.  You keep pushing yourself to run for "just one more song", but eventually your run ends.

6 miles
56 minutes
9.3 pace
At the old stomping grounds - Medicine Lake.  3/4 of the lake has ice on it.  It was 70 F today, I was sweating in t-shirt and shorts, but the ice cold breeze coming off the lake felt like Heaven.
Need to buy myself some new kicks for the marathon - recommend putting 30 miles on them before a race.  The new 2012 Asics got some great reviews - will probably go with them.  Happy Birthday to me.

Mr. Gonzalez

Today was a speed workout day - done with my bright green speed shoes!  I had some matching green socks as well...so even if the workout didn't go very well, at least I did it while looking like an obnoxious runner.

Here is what I did today...increased my speed from last weeks workouts from 9 mph to 10 mph.

1 mile @ 8:00

Ran for a total time of 52:31 and a distance of 6.01 miles.
It was difficult, but felt pretty good when done...and I love my shoes!

Oh, and I just read today that Binghamton was named the 5th most depressed city in the U.S. and the 2nd most obese...Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, right?  Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it rains 6 days a week...wow.

Epic Fail

I was so excited to run in my second new pair of shoes today...but it didn't go very well.
Lets Recap:
In January the doctor says..Yes Aaron you can keep running.  Just make sure that you are taking your medication...meaning my inhaler and zyrtek..
Oh, and in addition to that...once you start taking your shots, you will not want to exercise for at least an hour.

Today went like this...
Got up this morning...
Fail #1: Didn't take a zyrtek because I chose not to
Fail #2: Didn't take my inhaler because I ran out and hadn't filled my prescription
So I went to work and when I finished went to get my shot...
Fail #3:  3 minutes after my shot I was outside (oh yeah, I am allergic to things outside) on the rail trail running.

Boo will be proud of this little equation...
Fail #1 + Fail #2 + Fail #3 = An Epic Fail of me attempting to run on the rail trail and almost collapsing because I can't breath.

Tuesdays Run:
Miles:  1.5
Time:  10 Minutes
Pace:  1 small breath every 1/2 second

Oh No You Just Didn't

Good job sis!  Keep it up - you will be there before you know it.

Even though it was 60+ degrees outside today, I went to PF and ran on the treadmill so I could watch hoops during my long run...I ended up running a half marathon today on the treadmill and it felt really good.  So good that I put up my fastest half marathon time by a long shot...not too shabby!  I even had enough energy left over to take the big dog for a 4 mile walk...as I look to my left on the couch...she is sleeping like a baby...notice she needs to use pillows...spoiled rotten...it must be tough to be a puppy.  See below...

Anyway, I am really excited about how the run went today...hopefully I can shave a little more time off that before May rolls around.  Here is my run...and yes, my legs are now sore and I am not running tomorrow!

Sundays Run:
Miles:  13.1

Hollaback Girl

I am not, but I definitely think this song needs to be about 3/4 of the way through my playlist for the half.  It really gets me geared up!

Distance: 8 miles
Time:1:16
Pace:9.50
Conditions: 43 F at beginning of run, up to 50 F at the end.  I was sweating about 10 minutes in to this run. Strong winds.  Sunny.  Ran on sidewalks in the 'hood.

This was my first run outside of the season.  From the very first step, I was smiling.  Feels so good.  At the end of the run, I felt like I probably could have done a couple more miles which is a good sign.  9 weeks until the race, 5.1 miles to go.  I think I can do this.
I am not having the gastro problems I typically have, but I also ran in the morning which I am sure helped.  I also carried a small bottle of gatorade with me and drank that while running - only had about half of it, but this may also have helped.  Between carrying the Gatorade, having my Crackberry in my pocket and my ponytail, I was pretty grateful for all the strength training I have been doing.

My Detailed Half Marathon Training Plan

comfort zone

Day of R & R

That's rest and replenish...
No workouts scheduled for today.  Husband made me pancakes for breakfast.  Gearing up for an 8 mile run tomorrow outside.  It is supposed to be 55 today and tomorrow.  Supposedly perfect running weather.  I am sooooo looking forward to this.
Need to try to keep a lid on the fiber intake for today.

And you thought I was done....or maybe hoped I was.

Post Workout
I was laying down, enjoying a sauna while listening to my "Ultimate Running Playlist" when I saw Auntie Stephanie's cute countenance in the window.  I popped up and she came in.  She told me that Paul needed my help, his car had stalled.  And so we begin...
Paul was going to get the kids from daycare and his car wouldn't start (it was in the driveway).  He tried calling everyone and got no one.  He grabbed the stroller and started walking to Lucy's school, figuring that someone would soon call him back to give him a ride.  Well, he got there and still no call.  So, he packed her up and began walking home, again thinking that at any moment someone would call him back.  Again, no one.
He is getting close to home and it is getting really late (it is almost 5 miles there and back).  Luke needs to be picked up by 6 p.m. and it's 5:30 p.m.  So, he calls Stephanie and she answers.  She is close to the Y, so Paul asks her to go to the Y to track me down.  And that is how Stephanie and I came face to face in the YMCA sauna.
I picked up Luke and we are all home tonight, safe and sound.  The tow truck came and towed Paul's truck to the garage.  Hopefully they can look at it tomorrow and figure out what's wrong.
Paul and I have learned a valuable lesson through this experience.  The people he was calling tonight are the people listed on the kids emergency contact lists at their schools.  I think we may want to revise and/or add to this list....

Rumpshaker

Yeah, that's right.  I put together an "Ultimate Running List".  I think my first song for the Half Marathon may be "You Keep Me Hanging On" by Kim Wilde.

Friday's Workout:
Squats with the bar - 20 x 3 reps
Pull Ups - 10 x 3 reps
Triceps - 20 x 3 reps
Bicep curls - 10 x 3 reps
Bicep continuous curls - 10 x 3 reps
Shoulder Lifts - 10 x 3 reps

Then it was on to the track...now things start to get a little crazy!  Grandma Caroline was walking on the YMCA track.  No lie.  She was a much slimmer version of CJ and she wasn't toting a six pack of warm Caffeine Free Diet Coke and a carton of Benson and Hedges, but she brought tears to my eyes with her resemblance.  She also spoke to me; while doing a lap of walking lunges, she stopped and asked me what I was doing and what sport I was training for.  I figured I would give it to her straight up, no sugar coating, just like CJ would want.  I told her they were walking lunges and they made your legs and butt stronger.  I told her I was doing them so that I could run farther.  She just nodded her head and smiled.  Thanks Grandma - I know you are always with me.

1 mile: 8:30 pace
One lap of walking lunges (not included in mile tally)
1 mile: 9:00 pace
One lap of walking lunges (not included in mile tally)
1 mile: 10:00 pace
1 mile: alternating laps of sprints and regular pace - 9:00
1 mile: 10:00 pace

As you can see, the walking lunges killed my pace.  Legs burning.
I love my Brother's new Brooks shoes.

Can I Get An Amen?!?

There is so much to blog about today that I don't know quite where to start....so I will start at the beginning.

First of All....has anyone else noticed all of the awesomeness that this past year has brought?  I was thinking back to last year about this time and comparing it to now.  Wow.  I am so amazed and humbled.
These are just a select FEW of the highlights...

1) Brother Aaron is married.
2) Brother Boo is engaged.
3) My baby girl is now her own little person.  Seriously, HAD to wear her Dora pajama top to school today - made me take her back upstairs to put it on her.  Seriously.
4)  Lucas is registered for Kindergarten.  I will soon have a child in "real" school.
5)  My husband rode in the Tour De Tonka.  He has a goal of riding a Century this summer.
6)  I am in the best shape I have been in since High School.  I am registered to run a Half Marathon.

This is how I started today, thinking of all of these and many more blessings this past year has brought.  Thank you Jesus!  Does anyone else find all this amazing?  This was all in just ONE year!

Half Marathon Fueling

Pretty good video on how you should fuel your body during a half marathon...

New Kicks!

I got to run in a new pair of Brooks shoes today...they are a lightweight running shoe and different from the Ghost 4 that I have been running in...I like how they feel - different, but good.
My Wiff thinks they are "bright."  What do you think?

These are not the shoes that I will be running my half marathon in, but a shoe to use every once in a while to change things up...

Fridays Run:
Miles:  5.0
Time:  39:51
Pace:  7:58

I ran 27 miles this week - that would be record for me...as far as I can remember anyway.

Lori - GU gel is all right if you get a good flavor...you need to find one you like because you probably won't like every flavor...I actually prefer GU CHOMPS - which is a different form of gu...they come in cubes instead of a liquid...thats my take on GU.  I will have a package of GU CHOMPS with me for the 1/2.

I know it may be impossible for you...but have you tried running in the morning when you have nothing in your tummy?  I wouldn't think you would have the same poopie problems at that point in the morning.

Dinner Was Great

Did some speed work today...

2 miles @ 8:00
3 min walk
4 minutes @ 9 mph
3 min walk
3 minutes @ 9 mph
3 min walk
3 minutes @ 9 mph
3 minute walk
3 minutes @ 9 mph
3 minute walk
1.2 miles @ 8:00

6.02 miles in 53:08

And then when I got home I made myself some Spaghetti O's....with meatballs
And they were delicious.
Boom.

Finding The Cure

I am still having difficulties with gastric distress after the longer training runs - basically anything around 6 miles or over.  And by difficulties, I mean things are really bad.
I've been doing some researching online and have come to find out the answer really lies within myself.

There are so many possibilities that it seems my only recourse is to begin a workout journal documenting all factors.  Technically, this is a major part of my training for Fargo.  So, are you all ready to go on this "journey" with me?  Tie up your shoes and grab the toilet paper.

Food Log for today:
3 cups of the sweet nectar from the Gods (some people call it coffee)
2 Bowls of Kashi cereal
2 cups of Soy Milk
1/2 cup of Greek Yogurt
1/2 cup of blueberries
2 -Morningstar Hot Dogs
2 - slices of Double Protein bread
2 tbs mustard
2 tbs ketchup
32 ounces of water
1 medium apple

So yeah...... pretty embarassing because it's only 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon and most people don't eat this much in a day.  I still have afternoon snack, dinner and night time snack left.
Oh, and don't forget, this is not a workout night.  However, I am trying to make myself do DVD workouts at home on my "non-exercise" nights.  I haven't won that argument with myself, yet.

One factor that I am absolutely sure about is that this only happens when I run.  I have regularly been doing my boot camp class followed by tabatas class on Mondays which is 1.5 hours of intense cardio and strength training exercises.  However, I never have stomach problems afterwards.

Plan of Attack:
1) Tomorrow I am scheduled to do my running.  I am going to try drinking gatorade to see if the diarrhea may be due to electrolyte imbalance.
2) Will stop chewing gum with sorbitol.
3) Diet will be a constant evaluation. I think I need to cut back on the fiber the day before longer runs and overall, may need to increase my carb intake - and not the "good" carbs as they have fiber.
-Note to self: will have to try this next time as I have had a fair amount of fiber already today.
4) Next I may try something called "GU" packets.  Anybody have any thoughts on these?
5) As a last resort, I will take Immodium.  Depending on how this all goes, I may just take it on the day of the race to decrease my anxiety about pooping my pants/having diarrhea running down my legs, in front of thousands of people.

I Saw A Man Wearing A Cowboy Hat And A Leather Vest Rollerblading Today...I Laughed

Should have run outside today since it was 60 degrees here!!!  But I am in love with the treadmill..okay, not really.  But what I do like about the treadmill is that I can control how fast I have to run - and for right now, that is what I need.  I am trying to push myself into being able to run 7:30 minute miles..and I don't know what that feels like running on my own...so I am going to stick to the treadmill for a while...

Good run today!

Wednesdays Run:
Miles:  5.0
Time:  39:27
Pace:  7:53

Running Out The Soreness

While I was taking an easy run today to get some of the soreness out of my legs...I did while running next to stinky.  Its no wonder that the only treadmill left open out of the 50 was the one right next to him.  I was actually gagging while running...it made my 10 minute mile pace a little more difficult.

My legs are still sore...going to take tomorrow off from running.
I should have a new pair of Brooks shoes by the end of the week - really excited about that!
And I should have my Twins season tickets by the end of the week as well - boom!

Mondays Run:
Miles:  3.0
Time:  30 Minutes
Pace:  10:00

Running Just As Fast As We Can

Oh Sunday...my favorite running day.  Its the "lets see how far I can run today" day.  I managed 8 miles at a good pace...and was watching some pretty good golf and hoops on TV while running...that made the run a little easier.

Sundays Run:
Miles:  8.03
Time:  1:03:34
Pace:  7:55

Now, its time to relax and wait for my favorite show "Finding Bigfoot" to come on...

Lazy Bones

I didn't feel like running at all today - but managed to get to PF and run 4 miles.  I didn't set any speed records but I did get a good sweat.  I ran 26 miles this week, which is a personal high for me.  Going to take Saturday off and get back at it on Sunday.

Fridays Run:
Miles:  4.0
Time:  33:26
Pace:  8:21

We Didn't Start The Fire

That is going to be the first song on my playlist for the 1/2 marathon...can't go wrong with that one, right?

I did the same speed workout from last week again today...it went much better.

10 minutes @ 8:13
4 minutes @ 9 mph

3 minutes @ 9 mph

In other things that don't matter (like this blog)...the Twins won their exhibition game against the Red Sox 6-5.

Leap Year Leap Day

I am sure the last time I went for a run on February 29th was back in '65...

Planet Fitness is not nearly as crowded at 10:30 pm as it is at 5 pm - shocking, right?
Had a good run - even though it was eerily quiet.

I missed out on those pancakes yesterday - very disappointing.  I don't even know if we have an IHOP here?

Less than 3 months until race day -

Here is what the last run of February looked like...

Wednesdays Run:
Miles:  4.0
Time:  31:44
Pace:  7:55

Free IHOP Pancakes Today!

Just wanted to remind you!

Bring It On!! Nope. Definitely forgot it.

I had one of THOSE workouts last night...

Not feeling well - actually felt like I wanted to vomit, tired

Not feeling strong - actually had to decrease weights rather than put more on
                            - didn't have mental stamina to "breathe through the pain"
                            - gave up easily

Not feeling gratitude - wasn't really happy that I was able to work out
                               - just wanted to go home
                               - was just "putting in my time"

Did my boot camp class and skipped Tabatas.
Never going to make it to the finish line with this kind of training.
